Annual Leadership Conference with Southeastern Conference of Dental Laboratories

In mid April, when winter was still roaring in Wisconsin, I had a welcome reprieve to our never ending winter weather to attend the annual Southeastern Conference of Dental Laboratories (SCDL) annual leadership meeting in Louisville KY.   My goals were simple; represent the Midwest Dental Lab Association (MDLA), network with other dental lab owners, learn from the leadership team of SCDL, and bring ideas home to implement into our annual MDLA meeting from the great line up of speakers that were scheduled for the two day leadership seminar.

SCDL’s leadership conference first day included speakers, and a group activity taking in the networking time while learning about the distilling history and culture of Louisville KY.   Anne Stienbock VP of Sales and Marketing at Whip Mix Corporation, which is based in Lousiville, was the opening speaker. Anne shared the 100 year history of her family’s company, and how Whip Mix keeps a 360 degree view to continue to stay on the leading edge of R&D, sales and customer service.  Whip Mix Corporation history and dedication to customer service is a great example to follow in our businesses.

The second half of the day was spent in the first of two parts presented by Bill and Barry from Newport Board Group.  Bill and Barry’s company Newport Board group helps companies prepare to sell or get capital investors, and their message was clear now is a great time as the markets have excess investors with monies for acquisition or growth through capital investment of successful businesses.   Their program focus was based on a group participation on how to create the perfect company!  Key ideas they shared include ensuring your financial record keeping is in place and your company is hitting key markers, evaluation of your team and ensuring you have key managers in place who have solid relationships with your clients, and a diverse customer and sales strategy.  Even if your not thinking its time to sell or grow with capital investors it’s never to early to evaluate your key performance indicators, and ensure you have a solid financial history and performing staff for an easier transition!

SCDL’s focus on business performance and maximizing your business in growth or transition affirmed our focus on similar topics for the MDLA annual meeting in September 28 & 29, 2018.   We are excited to invite you to attend our conference!

MDLA members, their staff, and guests will find a wide variety of speakers focusing on Leadership topics including the State of the dental lab industry, changes in digital workflow, maximizing efficiencies and preparing for transitions, in addition to table clinics and technical speakers.  Thanks for the inspiration SCDL leadership conference for our Friday focus on leadership at MDLA.

Looking forward to seeing MDLA members, vendors and guests in September!
